Specific Injuries Experience
Tanya is a highly skilled Advanced Practitioner Occupational Therapist focused on neurorehabilitation. She has dedicated her career to supporting adults (18+) with a wide range of neurological conditions and injuries in the community.
Her core expertise includes acquired and traumatic brain injuries (ranging from mild cases to prolonged disorders of consciousness) and post-concussion syndrome.
Tanya also specialises in spinal cord injuries (complete and incomplete), spinal fractures, tumours, and cauda equina syndrome.
Many of Tanya’s clients face associated challenges like pain, cognitive impairment, mental health issues, bladder and bowel care and pressure sores.
Additionally, Tanya works with individuals who have complex neurological conditions such as stroke, Huntington’s disease, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and Motor Neurone Disease.
Tanya works closely with multidisciplinary team members, including case managers, to develop and implement holistic interventions that address both immediate and long-term care needs. She regularly recommends standard and specialised equipment to enhance clients’ quality of life and maximise their independence. Her role also involves conducting environmental assessments to evaluate accessibility and recommend necessary adaptations.
Within her clinical role, Tanya assesses, recommends, and reviews care packages that promote independence and facilitate an injured person’s reintegration into the community or workplace. She is also involved in determining the suitability or otherwise of residential care.
Employment Profile
Tanya has been an Advanced Practitioner Occupational Therapist in a community neurorehabilitation service since 2017. In this role, she assesses an individual’s functional abilities, determines their care and equipment needs, and validates care packages. Given the complexities of the neurological conditions she works with, these packages vary widely—from community care provided by agencies and personal assistants to specialist services. Tanya is a confident and experienced clinician who excels in report writing and attending panel meetings to present clear clinical reasoning to justify her recommendations to funding bodies.
Before her current position, Tanya worked across acute, community, and specialist rehabilitation settings, both inpatient and outpatient. From 2004 to 2017, she was the clinical lead for a reablement service, further strengthening her understanding of the patient journey from immediate post-injury through long-term rehabilitation.
Tanya remains clinically up to date by attending conferences and study days, including the Rural Health Care Conferences (2018, 2024), the Elizabeth Carson Leadership Course (mentor/facilitator role, 2021–2024), and the Queen’s Square Upper Limb Rehabilitation Course (2022–2024). Since 2019, she has also been a visiting lecturer at Cardiff and Swansea Universities, sharing her expertise in neurorehabilitation and the role of occupational therapy.
