Specific Injuries Experience
With over 25 years of experience, Nicola has developed a profound expertise in providing specialist care to children and young people with complex conditions. Since 2020, she has worked as a case manager, focusing on children with cerebral palsy or brain injuries suffered at the time of birth, accidents or negligence. Nicola’s expertise also encompasses supporting children with intricate medical needs, including long-term ventilation, tracheostomy care and PEG/JEJ/NG feeding.
Many of the children Nicola works with have additional issues such as orthopaedic injuries, visual and hearing impairments, or pressure sores. Her extensive clinical experience enables her to understand and address a child’s long-term needs throughout their key developmental stages.
In addition to her vast experience in assessing for and implementing care, Nicola’s proficiency as a case manager allows her to identify and recommend solutions to meet the therapeutic, equipment, housing, transportation, and social needs of significantly injured children and young people.
Employment Profile
As a case manager, Nicola leverages her skills, knowledge and expertise to coordinate rehabilitation care and support for children and young people with complex care and equipment needs. She has a comprehensive understanding of support service limitations and collaborates closely with multi-disciplinary professionals across health, social care and education sectors. This has helped her gain an in-depth knowledge of local care and equipment providers, fostering excellent professional relationships to ensure that each child can achieve optimal independence and quality of life.
Nicola is sensitive to the needs of children and young people following trauma and the complex family dynamics that can arise. She works closely with families to advocate for the child, ensuring her specialist knowledge keeps the child at the centre of the rehabilitation and support plan.
Throughout her clinical career, Nicola has worked in various settings, including inpatient, community and private healthcare. She spent many years as a community children’s nurse before transitioning to case management. In her previous role with a specialist nursing and care company, she was responsible for establishing complex paediatric care packages across Lincoln and Nottingham. Her duties included all care plan risk assessments, reviews and carer training.
In addition to her case management role, Nicola engages in continuous professional development opportunities to stay current with the latest innovations and best practices. She maintains hands-on clinical practice by providing specialist complex paediatric nursing care through Thornbury Community Services.
