Specific Injuries Experience
Drawing on her extensive nursing and case management experience, Helen has a focus on working with children, young people and adults with an acquired or traumatic brain injury. She is confident in all levels of brain injury, from mild/moderate to those requiring more complex nurse-led care including enteral feeding and equipment. Additionally, Helen regularly works with individuals who have cerebral palsy, epilepsy, learning disabilities and challenging behaviours. Her considerable clinical knowledge provides her with a great understanding of the long-term implications of such injuries, and the likely care and equipment recommendations required to meet the individual’s needs.
Helen’s case management clients often have a range of co-morbidities; because of this she has good insight when it comes to commenting on associated injuries such as lower limb amputations, orthopaedic injuries, mental health, chronic pain and visual impairment.
Helen has completed large housing adaptation projects and is very comfortable outlining these types of recommendations. She is adept at recognising the client’s requirements to help them access the community – from liaising with the DVLA and facilitating transport options to sourcing and arranging appropriate holidays or respite breaks.
Employment Profile
From her many years working as a brain injury case manager, Helen has considerable experience in recognising, implementing and managing the overall care and equipment needs of her clients. She is responsible for assessing the individual in their home environment and setting up/costing appropriate packages of care – this includes writing update reports and the recruitment and management of large support teams. Helen takes a person-centred approach when assessing for and arranging bespoke packages of care for her clients. She works with the individual to help set and achieve realistic goals. Helen is passionate about working with the client and their families to facilitate independence so far as possible.
Helen has achieved advanced practitioner status with the British Association of Brain Injury and Complex Case Management (BABICM). She is dedicated to her continuous professional development through regular attendance at study days, courses, refresher courses and industry events. Helen has a special interest in epilepsy management and delivers training on epilepsy awareness and the safe administration of buccal midazolam in epilepsy.
Helen started her career working in a range of NHS hospital and community nursing settings supporting people with learning disabilities to access health services. Earlier in her career, Helen worked as an operational manager within a charity that supports people with learning disabilities to live in their own homes with support. Part of this role saw her supporting clients through independent living trials. During 2022/23, Helen took a position as Clinical Registered Manager overseeing six complex needs homes – her time in this role helped her to further develop her understanding of CQC compliance and employment law.
